Despite a brief weather scare, the Colchester City Carnival and Funfair 2025 unfolded into a dazzling celebration of diversity, unity, and community pride, surpassing even our boldest expectations. Held on Saturday, 19 July, and led by the Colchester Diverse Communities Network (CDCN), this year’s event demonstrated what’s possible when people of all backgrounds come together with shared purpose and joy.
Planning a Carnival with Purpose
Planning for the 2025 event began in October 2024, building on the momentum of two successful prior years. With early sponsor commitments of £6,000, growing to nearly £10,000 through generous local support, our team held strategic meetings, trustee sessions, and public briefings over several months. Every element was thoughtfully prepared, from early applications to Amphora Ltd, to noise mitigation plans for residents around Lower Castle Park.
At the heart of our preparation was CDCN’s mission: to bring communities together, honour cultural richness, and promote social cohesion through inclusive celebration.
A Day to Remember: Carnival Highlights
Saturday morning saw community groups arrive early to complete preparations. By midday, the energy across Colchester was electric. Led by me and a vibrant ensemble including Brazilian Samba dancers, the Town Crier, Town Watch, Carnival Queen, Prince and Princesses (organised by Pam Waller), and spectacular performances by Drumafrique with fire-eating acts, the procession swept through the historic town centre, thrilling onlookers along High Street and into Lower Castle Park. The brief drizzle during the procession did little to dampen spirits.
From 2:30 pm to 7:00 pm, the park came alive with:
27 on-stage community performances in traditional dress and cultural expression
16 international food stalls, serving flavours from around the globe, Funfair rides and ice cream vans, bringing joy to families and children, Merchandise and outreach stalls, including key local services such as St Helena Hospice, Essex Search and Rescue, and the NHS Cancer Awareness campaign. Thanks to our incredible MC team, Rodney, Irene, Liz, Sami, and DJ Ross, the stage remained vibrant and flowing throughout the day. Their professionalism ensured every act had its moment in the spotlight, creating an unforgettable celebration of multicultural expression.
The People Behind the Magic
This success was possible only through the unwavering dedication of many. A special thank you to Naina and Masina Gurung, who worked tirelessly by my side throughout the day. Thanks also to our volunteers, performers, stallholders, and funfair providers, whose contributions brought life, sound, and colour to every corner of the event.
Our security and safety teams deserve special recognition:
Gordon Evans and his staff at Zed Security Ltd, Essex Police, Rotary Clubs of Colchester, including the Colchester Forum and Colchester Club, who provided 23 safety stewards.
Your behind-the-scenes efforts ensured a safe, seamless, and joyous celebration for all.
Heartfelt Thanks to Our Sponsors and Supporters.
To our sponsors, thank you for believing in this vision. Your financial support enabled us to create a celebration of culture and unity that reached thousands of people.
As Sir Bob Russell, former MP for Colchester, shared in his message:
“Congratulations on today’s Colchester Carnival, it was most enjoyable! A lot of organisation had clearly been put into the proceedings. Even the arrival of the rain did not spoil the occasion! I greatly appreciate what you achieved.”
With the ongoing support of our sponsors, Sir Bob, Pam Cox MP, and the Mayor, we hope to continue building on this legacy, year after year.
Community Voices
Feedback from across the community was profoundly moving. Just a few highlights from attendees:
“Despite the challenging weather, you pulled off a fantastic event with great spirit and energy.”
“You made us all feel welcomed and part of the team.”
“Truly inspiring… Your dedication and commitment made all the difference.”
“Thank you for allowing us to do something truly meaningful.”
These testimonials reflect what the Carnival has come to mean for Colchester: not just a one-day event, but a living celebration of connection and belonging.
Looking Ahead
As we begin preparations for next year’s Carnival on Saturday, 18 July 2026, we carry forward not only the lessons of this year but the energy, pride, and unity that made it so special. The Colchester Diverse Communities Network (CDCN) remains committed to fostering inclusion, promoting cultural awareness, and building community bridges, not just through our Carnival, but throughout the year.
