Colchester City marked the start of the holiday season with a spectacular Christmas Light Switch-On event held on Wednesday, 13th November at 5:00 pm. The chairman had been notified about two months prior and, upon the request of a manager at Mercury Theatre, was invited to bring a group of Nepalese dancers and fellow enthusiasts to join the festivities.

The celebration kicked off with a brief program at Gurkha Home, where approximately 50-60 people, including four Nepalese dancers, assembled with vibrant music. At 4:20 pm, the group paraded from Gurkha Home to Mercury Theatre, where they were welcomed by Forest and Emily from Mercury Theatre. The Nepalese group was chosen to be the finale of the parade, using their creative performance and lively music to energize the crowd.

The parade officially began at 5:30 pm, transforming Church Street and High Street into a jubilant pathway filled with lights and joyful displays. Various community groups joined in, bringing their unique touch to the festive evening. The Nepalese contingent’s dance and music were a highlight, captivating attendees and encouraging them to join in the celebration. The festivities continued until the procession reached Berrifield Lawn at Firstsite, where each organization presented its activities. The Nepalese music and performances particularly drew the crowd, creating a spirited atmosphere that brought people together in shared enjoyment.

The evening came to a close shortly after 6:15 pm, as the attendees made their way back to their homes, having enjoyed a memorable start to the Christmas season. Thanks go to everyone who participated (especially Khagendra and Shova Hamal, Sarita Pachabhaiya, Bhanu Kaucha, Kamala Khatri and Mitra Gurung) and celebrated this special event, lighting up Colchester in true holiday style.
