On January 13, 2025, a heartwarming gesture of gratitude took place during the funeral of the late Kamansing Gurung. In line with Nepalese funeral traditions, mourners typically bring flowers and khada garments to honor the deceased. However, the funeral organisers decided to make a sustainable change this year by discouraging using flowers and khada garments. Flowers would wilt and rot within a few days, and khada garments, which, if burnt, would damage the environment, were replaced with loose flowers for the mourners.
As part of this eco-conscious approach, a collection was made during the funeral service to honor the late Kamansing Gurung. In a beautiful show of appreciation for the care he received, £780 was raised for the staff at Oaks Care Home in Lexden, where Mr. Gurung had spent over a year under the loving care of their dedicated team.
In a heartfelt gesture, Mrs. Sundevi Gurung, the widow of the late Kamansing Gurung, personally handed over the £780 to the Manager of Oaks Care Home on 6 March. She expressed her gratitude for the exceptional care her husband received, sharing how the staff had gone above and beyond in their commitment to his well-being. Mrs. Gurung conveyed that, while they could not provide anything grand, this donation would hopefully support the team in fulfilling some of their needs.
The collection and gesture highlight the strong bonds between residents and the staff at Oaks Care Home, and we sincerely thank the mourners who contributed to this meaningful cause. Well done to all involved, and may this act of kindness inspire others to continue supporting the incredible efforts of care home staff everywhere.
