Teej, a vibrant festival for women, especially in Nepalese communities, was celebrated enthusiastically on Saturday, 7 September 2024, at Stanway Village Community Hall. The event, typically observed during the monsoon season, is a time for married women to pray for their husbands' well-being and for single women to aspire to a prosperous future.
The day kicked off early, and community members, including executives and area representatives, assembled to decorate the venue. By 14:30, the stage, tables, banners, and PA system were ready to welcome participants. New Laxmi Jewellers' Road Show added a touch of glamour, while the community members began arriving by 16:00, including two notable national singers from Nepal, Rejina Pariyar and Rabin Lamichhane.
The festivities officially began with a health and safety briefing, followed by the ceremonial lighting of candles by the chief guest, Mrs. Sun Kumari Gurung, Isha Gurung, and other dignitaries. Afterwards, the much-anticipated Mrs Colchester competition took centre stage. Seventeen participants showcased their talents through self-introductions and dance performances, with Mrs Ankita Bagale emerging as the winner, Mrs Sarala Adhikari securing the first runner-up, and Mrs Maiya Limbu securing the second runner-up chosen by the two judges, Mrs Yashoda Pun and Mrs Mahima Gyawali, Laxmi Adhikari, the winner of last year's Mrs Colchester along with last year's 1st and 2nd runners-up Mrs Rupa Shrestha and Mrs Yunish Pun. The photographer and videographer was none other than Mr Khagendrajung Hamal, who captured excellent photographs.
The musical performances were a highlight of the evening. Rejina Pariyar's melodic voice kept the crowd dancing, while Rabin Lamichhane's soulful tunes mesmerized everyone after a delightful dinner catered by Saroj Sherpa.
The night concluded with a raffle draw, during which 11 lucky winners were announced. Mrs Tikisara Pun won the top prize, a £100 voucher. The assistant Ladies' Coordinator, followed by the Ladies' Coordinator, thanked everyone who contributed to the event's success, from decorators to PA system operators and food coordinators.
By 12:20 am, the event wrapped up with members working together to clean up, leaving the hall with smiles and a sense of accomplishment. Teej 2024 was a celebration of tradition but also of community spirit and unity.
